Aqara smart wireless switch review

This is the article on “Aqara sensors”. I have been asked by some readers to write about what I am doing here. The first one was about the general as well as the door and window sensor of Aqara. Therefore, I will not go into everything again, but will touch on already mentioned things. This article deals with the Aqara smart wireless switch, which is quite easy to use as it offers only one button. With it you can realize various switching states, three in number.

I connected the wireless switch (45 × 45 × 12 mm) to the Aqara hub EU version (using Zigbee), which ensures that the functions of the switch are also available in Apple HomeKit. The smart wireless switch by Aqara is powered by a CR2032 button cell and can also be glued somewhere by you, it has a glue on the back. In the Xiaomi Home app or in the Apple Home app you can then define what happens during the switching states, there are: 1x press, 2x press and long press.

At home we have a wireless switch from Aqara at our son’s bed, he can also control his lamps via speech, but if he gets out of the loft bed sleepy in the evening or at night, a switch is sometimes better. And so 1x press makes one of his lamps turn on, a second time activates the light tube under his bed and the Longpress generally turns everything off.

Three states, which you can of course assign differently, so you could set switching states and several devices in scenes or use the switch in cooperation with the hub as a “bell” for at home. There are hardly any limits. This Aqara smart wireless switch is well made and looks very stable in its plastic housing.

How much does it cost? That depends on where you order. I shot mine myself for 8 dollars, ordered from Gearbest, where there are always special offers – sometimes the sensors and switches are cheaper at Aliexpress and Banggood. The Aqara sensors and switches can also be found on eBay and Amazon, often more than twice as expensive, although they are also Chinese dealers.

The switches have a CE marking, furthermore it is best to order only small quantities in order to stay below the value limit of 22 dollars – by the way, customs includes shipping costs in this value limit. The decisive factor is what amount was actually paid to receive the goods. If postage costs are included in the final invoice amount, they will not be deducted.

Yeelight LED light bulb

We continue in the series of connected devices of Xiaomi. After the opening sensors, the Yeelight LED ribbon and many others, I suggest you discover today the Yeelight LED light bulb. This one exists in two versions: a white version and a color version. Personally, I assume that the most can the least can, so I opted for the color bulb: the Yeelight RGB bulb. This one will take place in my garage, and will be controlled by Aqara switch from Xiaomi.

Packaging
As far as packaging is concerned, Xiaomi has made it very simple, as usual. Inside the box, there is the bulb and a manual in Chinese.

How the Yeelight LED light bulb works
The operation of the Yeelight LED light bulb is relatively simple. Just plug it in and you’re done. To manage it, there are 2 solutions: the Mi Home application, which I have already told you about several times, or the Yeelight application.

Bulb management with MiHome
Open the MiHome application and connect to your Mi account. If you don’t have one, create one. On the Home screen, click the + button at the top right.

Click on the Add manually button at the bottom of the screen.

Look for the bulb you want to pair in the list. Be careful, there are two types of Yeelight LED bulbs: white bulbs and RGB bulbs (colors). For my part, I bought the color bulb, so I’m taking the RGB bulb.

The application will search for the bulb.

Once you have found the bulb, the application asks you to enter your WiFi information. This will be used to configure the bulb.

Wait while the bulb is being configured.

There, the connection of the bulb is complete. Now choose the room in which your bulb will be installed.

Your bulb now appears in MiHome. You can turn it on and off simply by clicking on it.

Bulb management with the Yeelight application
Open the Yeelight application and log in to your Mi account. If you don’t have one, create one. Then click on the + button at the top right.

Then select the bulb model to add.

And as with the MiHome application, you must fill in the information of your WiFi network and wait for the configuration. Once the configuration is complete, give your bulb a name to easily locate it in the application. I spare you all the screenshots here….

Once this is done, you can manage your bulb with the Yeelight application.

Integration of the bulb in Domoticz

Now we’re going to go further and integrate this Yeelight bulb into Domoticz. To be able to do this, it will be necessary to activate the network control of the bulb beforehand, via the Yeelight application. So open the application and press the bulb. In the page that opens, click on the button at the bottom right representing an arrow (see capture below).

That is done. We now go to Domoticz to add our light bulb. Here, we’re not going to proceed as usual. Indeed, with Yeelight devices, it is necessary to use an intermediate device. Open the Settings menu and click on Hardware.

Then fill in the form to add a material:

Name: give the name you want. I’m going to put something explicit Yeelight

Type: Yeelight LED

Leave the rest as it is and click on Add.

Now click on the blue Add Light button on the line of the new device.

Give your bulb a name, enter its IP address and select the type of bulb (white or RGB).

Now go to Settings and click on Devices.

In the list of devices, look for the bulb. For more readability, you can click on the Unused button at the top right. Add it by clicking on the green arrow at the end of the line.

Give it a name to easily find it in Domoticz.

Go to the Switches tab and hop, your bulb appears.

You can therefore control it from here, either manually or by using events, scenarios, etc.

Opinion on the Yeelight LED light bulb

The Yeelight LED light bulb is very easy to install and use. It fits perfectly into the Xiaomi ecosystem, but also into a Domoticz solution, for my greatest pleasure. It is not out of the question that I may buy more later.

We find a cardboard in the brand’s usual colors (Blue and black). Simple, classic and effective.

Inside we are facing 4 devices each indicated by a sheet with the name in their respective location. Very useful because at the first opening the devices look the same. It is only after a little deepening that we notice their particularities.

Before focusing on the important elements, let’s take a look at the lower part of the box that includes the charger, the fasteners and the two opening detectors provided in the package.

They are white in color, lightweight and with a very discreet design that makes them invisible above a door of the same color.

Now let’s have a look at the 4 main parts of this kit. At first glance, they look strangely like cream jars. They are circular, white with a silver ring and a finish that seems solid. Each of the elements has a role of its own:

The K1 central unit: It is the heart of the system that receives and processes

signals to and from the wireless detectors.

Motion detector: Captures suspicious movements while ignoring the movements of animals under 23Kg

The control keypad: Device consisting of 4 non-numeric keys and a rotating ring to control the entire system.

The siren: Emits a powerful 90 dB sound to deter all intruders.

The devices are equipped with an anti-sabotage system that detects when someone tries to remove the device from the wall.

It should be noted that there is a small tool to facilitate the opening of certain compartments of the various devices. Pretty ingenious.

Installation

The application

To download the application and configure your account I invite you to consult our article on the panoramic camera from the same manufacturer since you will be able to use all the systems with a single application.

Configuration of K1

Once configured according to your profile, choose to install the K1 system. Then connect the power cord until the light flashes blue. Once this is done, you have another useful tool at your disposal. It is located under the K1 control unit and allows you to press the Reset and WiFi buttons, which can only be accessed via small holes. Press and hold the Wifi button for 3s until the LED flashes red and blue. Then select the WiFi network corresponding to your central unit and associate it with the WiFi network in your home. Remember to remove the white plastics that cut the connection between the batteries and the devices for each of them.

You have just completed the configuration of your device! The smartphone interface presents different information:

The text is a history of the plant’s actions. This way you can consult all the events with the times and corresponding information.

The 4 buttons at the bottom allow you to change the remote statuses which are: SOS, Home, Unarmed and Armed.

You can also choose a mode using the control box. To do this, you will have to turn the silver ring in one direction or the other depending on what you want to do and then dial the secret code (Basic is to press the upper left button 6 times). It is possible to create a more or less long personalized code (6 clicks maximum).

The scenes

You can control the different scenes directly from the control panel or from the application.

Residence

Configuration from the housing: Turn the ring clockwise and then counterclockwise. Finally dial the secret code.

As its name suggests, it is when you are at home. It disables the motion detector so that you and your family members can move freely around the house without triggering the alert. Nevertheless, the opening detectors installed on doors and windows remain active to avoid any intrusion attempts when you are sleeping or busy. Remember to disable this mode if you want to exit through a door equipped with opening detectors. Otherwise you will hear the 90 dB of your alarm.

Disarmed

Configuration from the case: Turn the ring counterclockwise and dial the secret code.

All sensors are shutting down. Only those configured in 24-hour mode will be independent of the system. They can be used, for example, to monitor the doors of an electrical cabinet, medicine cabinet, etc. Or places at risk of flooding such as dishwashers, hot water tanks…

Armed

Configuration from the case: Turn the ring clockwise and enter the secret code.

Recommended when you are not at home, it activates all monitoring systems and immediately triggers the alarm in case of a suspicious event. You will also receive a notification on your phone at the same time.

Conclusion

At first glance you can expect something difficult to configure. But not at all! All you have to do is power up and connect the control unit to the application to make everything work. You will then receive notifications and alerts directly on your smartphone. It is efficient and its design is its great strength. It is immediately clear why she has been awarded twice with a Red Dot Product Design Award and a Computex d&i Gold Award. For people who are looking for something complete and functional, this kit has everything you need. However, note that the Z-Wave protocol is only used for the home automation part and all accessories and other detectors use a proprietary protocol.
